TWO FOR THE TAKING

When Heinz Buckwalter, part owner of an auto salvage yard in the Bronx answers a late-night call to tow an unclaimed car, he has no idea how this simple conduct of business will irrevocably change his life. Back at the salvage yard, he and partner Murray Rosenfeld discover two abandoned children tucked away in the back seat of the car. All that accompanies them is a brief note that reads "Their names are Eliza and Billy Mayfield. Please take care of them as I can't".

Desperate, Buckwalter and Rosenfeld ask their friend, tavern proprietor Sally Mitchell to let the children stay with her. Sally and her associate Jeanette Beasley are immediately attracted to the children and a fast bond is formed. Later, Lieutenant Martin Scorsky and Detective Sergeant Chris Cunningham of the NYPD visit the salvage yard and inform Buckwalter and Rosenfeld that the FBI believes that the towed car was involved in an armoured car robbery in Boston. The trunk contains the body of a woman who is identified as the children's mother, and wife of Hal Merriweather, a robbery suspect. It's deemed that she died of cancer.

Scorsky lets the chidren stay with Sally temporarily. Given the aid of an ex-con friend, Merriweather recovers the stolen money ($2 million) he hid in Springfield, MA. then sets out for New York to get his children. En route he is spotted from a police circular. He and his accomplice attempt to escape but lose control of their vehicle and fatally crash. At this juncture all four of the armoured car robbers have died violently and the loot is lost.

When the New York Child Protective Service steps in to take the children, Buckwalter states that he and Sally are going to be married and plan to adopt Eliza and Billy. After the papers are signed to keep the children, Buckwalter tells Sally of his long-standing intent to propose but simply lacked the courage. They are wed and provide Eliza and Billy with their best Christmas ever.
